Leylah Fernandez Bows Out of Monterey Open in the Round of 16

Canada’s Leylah Fernandez fell in the first round of the Monterey Open on Wednesday as she fell to Slovakia’s Rebecca Sramkova in three sets. After winning the opening set 6–2, and serving 64.3% of her first serves, Fernandez watched Sramkova come back to take all five break points in sets two and three, winning 2–6, 6–3, 6–2 in a match that lasted 2 hours and 9 minutes.

Fernandez, the 7th seed and a two-time champion of the WTA 500 event (Previously known as the Mexico Open), had recently won the Washington Open, although she had earlier exited both the National Bank Open and Cincinnati events in early rounds prior to this.

On the other hand, Canadian doubles player, Gabriela Dabrowski, stays alive in the doubles draw. Together with Erin Routliffe, they will take on the Russian pairing of Kamilla Rakhimova and Irina Khromacheva later today.
